"It's All About Sunday"

On August 1, 2010, the 16U Bergen Blazers ended their magical season with a 3-1 championship game win over Apponaug Gold (Massachusetts) in the ASA East Bay Invitational in Bristol, RI.  It was the 4th tournament victory in 8 tournaments entered.  Jena Kayte ("JK") McAvoy was named tournament MVP, with stellar defensive play and a .750 on base percentage.  (Batgirl Victoria Sandner was a close second in the MVP balloting).  Pitchers Nicole Hroncich, Jaimie Gorman and Ally Mende split the championship game.  The Blazers trailed 1-0 in the 4th, but got a 2 out RBI hit from Emily Riemer to plate Andie Scibetta, followed by an RBI hit by Rhianna Maglio.  The Blazers picked up an insurance run in the 6th when McAvoy scored on a 2 out RBI by Becca Butler.  The 16s and 18s stayed in beautiful Newport, RI and enjoyed the cliffs, mansions and great restaurants.  The trophy ceremony was cut short because the 18U Bergen Blazers were in the bottom of the 7th of their championship game on an adjacent field, and the 16s ran over to watch the dramatic conclusion.  Click here to see how that worked out!
On July 18, 2010, the 16U Bergen Blazers won the 4th Annual Blazer Bash tournament in their home town of Ridgewood, NJ.  Nicole Sandner was named tournament MVP, hitting 3 doubles and a triple and throwing out 5 runners while catching all 28 innings in the elimination round.  Nicole Hroncich batted .571 and won 2 games on the mound on Sunday, and pitcher Jaimie Gorman was the feel good story of the tournament, winning 2 Sunday games including the championship game.  The infield defense was led by shortstop Courtney Pedalino who repeatedly made spectacular plays and only 1 error in 30 chances, and secondbaseman JK McAvoy who made a series of spectacular plays herself.  In the elimination round Andie Scibetta rapped two triples - one that travelled well over 200 ft - and a double and made key outfield catches.  Shannon Walsh batted .400 and had the game winning RBI in the 7th inning of the quarterfinal game.
On June 27, 2010, the 16U Bergen Blazers won the Rockaway 16U PONY National Qualifier tournament in Rockaway, NJ.  Shortstop Courtney Pedalino was named tournament MVP, Erica Machi went 10 for 15 with a homerun, and pitchers Nicole Hroncich and Ally Mende, backed by the Blazers' defense, yielded only 5 runs in 4 elimination round games.
On June 6, 2010, the 16U Bergen Blazers weathered the competition and the incoming storm to win the Secaucus, NJ 18U ISA World Series Qualifier.  Pitcher's Ally Mende and Nicole Hroncich shared the MVP title, Rhianna Maglio had an on base % of .600, Courtney Pedalino banged out 7 consecutive hits, and Emily Riemer belted a dramatic game winning RBI double with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning of the title game.
